Days Traveling with a Child: Early Kyoto Station Dinners Before Heading Back to Rest

Ending the day with familiar flavors and warm rice instead of dragging out late outings

After walking all day with a child, you don’t feel like venturing far in search of somewhere new for dinner. You need to eat before hunger turns severe, then head back to your accommodations to rest. On days like that, rather than unfamiliar dishes, you naturally look for food your child will reach for willingly, alongside a comfortable meal for the grown-ups.

Near the station, I picked three spots offering hamburger steaks, udon, and rice with side dishes. Going early doesn’t necessarily eliminate waiting, but these comforting meals left no regret about skipping any post-dinner itinerary.

A welcome dinner of foil-wrapped hamburger steaks and familiar Western-style dishes.

The moment the foil opened, my child showed interest right away

On an evening when Japanese side dishes didn’t appeal to my child, a hamburger steak proved a welcome solution. Just opening the foil to reveal the rich sauce and meat was enough to spark interest in the meal.

Working through the rich beef stew sauce, tender meat, and accompanying potato brought the entire meal together within a single dish. As steam billowed out, my first instinct was naturally to check on my child.

Lightening the rich meat flavors with tomato

The whole tomato salad was chilled and refreshing, making it an ideal palate cleanser between bites of the rich hamburger steak. Enjoyed together with the tuna and dressing beneath the tomato, it felt more like a complete composed dish than a simple vegetable side.

Even dropping by for an early dinner, I have had to check our place in line and wait. Rather than arriving after a child is already exhausted, it felt like somewhere you’d prefer to settle on eating while everyone still has some energy to spare.

Mimiu Kyoto Isetan Branch美々卯 京都伊勢丹店

A warming udon meal enjoyed with a child who finds broth and noodles soothing.

Meals where my child gladly ate the noodles and broth put my mind at ease. Even with udon-suki (udon hot pot) containing a variety of ingredients, we could pick items centered around the noodles, so the meal never stalled over a single vegetable or side dish.

The broth, deepening in flavor as the chicken, yuba, and vegetables simmered, was wonderful for the adults too. Instead of everyone in the family having to eat the exact same items in equal measure, simply picking what caught each person’s eye felt comfortable and natural.

On days meant for rest, a single bowl is more than enough

When we lacked the time or energy to sit through a slow-simmered hot pot, a single bowl of yuba udon felt much more manageable. With generous yuba and mild, gentle broth, even a simple one-bowl meal never felt lacking.

A leisurely evening simmering hot pot and a quick dinner over a single bowl before heading back are two completely different experiences. Being able to choose depending on how tired the child was and our remaining route was a definite plus.

For days when warm rice and simple side dishes matter more than elaborate dining.

White rice, miso soup, and small side dishes

Sitting down before warm rice and miso soup helped settle the mental fatigue of deliberating over complicated menus. The rice grew subtly sweet the more you chewed, and enjoying it with a few chosen side dishes kept this simple spread from feeling monotonous.

Securing a seat during early dinner hours let us choose our side dishes and receive our rice with ease, easing naturally into the meal. Traveling dinners don’t always have to be an elaborate course.

Starting small with the side dishes

Assorted side dishes including lotus root, pumpkin, and pickles

Seasoned burdock root and braised root vegetables paired wonderfully with rice. Sampling a bite of each was part of the fun, but the pickled dishes had quite pronounced seasoning, so tasting a little bit first worked best for me.

When choosing together with a child, I don’t assume every side dish will be mild. I prefer viewing it as a straightforward meal centered around rice, where we simply share and select what appeals to us. After finishing hot soup and warm rice, going back to rest feels far more inviting than lingering outside.

Choose Toyotei when you crave familiar meat flavors, Mimiu when comforting noodles and broth sound best, or Doi for a calm meal centered around white rice and side dishes. When dinner is framed around eating comfortably together and heading back to unwind rather than cramming in one more stop, traveling with a child becomes much more relaxed.
